In the next example, I’ve chosen to compare, Paranormal activity the marked ones with Poltergeist. As you can see both posters have a black background which is common in every horror film poster as it connotes a dark, evil narrative the film may offer. The black background is often supported with some sort of image which is an opposing colour such as white.

This poster illustrates 70% of image and 30% of body copy. The background of the poster is black which symbolises a dark, mysterious film but also as there is a man standing in the middle of the poster with a bright light shining towards him from out of a window. This may place us as the audience in a position to think that, there is a narrative behind that window and that this unknown man standing outside the front entrance may be there to help or solve the narrative.

The text such as the credits at the bottom of the poster is in a white colour font however, the title of the film stand out the most as it is in a bigger font size than the credits but also as it is in purple, which stand out in the black background.

Ancillary 1: Research

Ancillary Research 1

I’ve decided to create a film poster as one of my ancillary products. The reason behind this is strictly because it’s a common way for films to advertise their films but also for the audience to get a glimpse of what the film may offer.

When researching different film posters, there are 4 different aspects I’ll be looking into from the posters which are:

  • The audience

(What type of audience does the poster & the film appeal to and what audiences it may not, Age, Gender and class)

  • Narrative

(Enigma codes, action codes)

  • Genre

(what type of genre it is and the conventions of it)

  • Representation

(Positive? Stereotypical? Negative? Counter-typical?)
